Motor yacht Elsa declared to be a loss. Update May 6

On Monday, May 8, operations for the salvage of motor vessel Elsa will resume. The 48-metre luxury motor yacht ran aground at Ladder Bay on March 22.

Rijkswaterstaat, an entity of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, has hired salvage company Koole-Mammoet to remove the vessel. This is the same company that is currently salvaging MV Sirena on St. Eustatius.

The provisional plan is to cut Elsa and lift it. The aim is to remove Elsa before the start of the 2017 hurricane season, which begins June 1.

Personnel of Koole-Mammoet will be on Saba during the next couple of days to start planning the salvage. The general public is warned that the condition of the vessel is too dangerous for boarding. No person is allowed to board the vessel without express permission.

The vessel Elsa has now been deemed a loss. Because of this development, the responsibility for removal of the vessel has now shifted to a different party. This means that this new party will need to analyze the current situation of the vessel and assess the various options for removal. In the meantime, a contract is being negotiated with the current salvage company to continue to take care of the vessel and to limit any further impact it may have on the surrounding environment.

The Public Entity is working closely with the new parties, in order to ensure that the best interests of Saba are taken into account during the decision making process. The community will be updated as operations progress and further decisions are made.

  1. Elsa would make a great dive site. With a flotation collar could it be taken to a permanent location?
