TROPICAL CYCLONE BULLETIN NO. 1

Watches/warnings:

There are no watches or warnings in effect at this time. At 500 AM AST (0900 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 18.0 North, longitude 47.5 West. Irma is moving toward the west-southwest near 15 mph (24 km/h), and this course at a slightly slower forward speed is expected through tonight. A turn toward the west is forecast on Monday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Irma is a category 3 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is forecast through Monday night. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km).

Effect on local conditions

Winds: Tuesday evening and on Wednesday there is a moderate probability (around 60%) that tropical-storm-force winds (exceeding 34 kt) related to Hurricane Irma will reach the islands. The probability for Hurricane-force winds (exceeding 64 kt) is 20-30% during the same period.

Seas:

Waves are building up to 10-15 ft and may reach values around 20 ft later on Wednesday.

Rainfall:

From later on Tuesday till Thursday high amounts of rainfall are expected. Amounts of 2 to 4 inches are likely.

Local authorities and residents of Saba and St. Eustatius are advised to continue monitoring the further progress of this weather system and to take all necessary measures to safeguard life and property.
