Dutch TV campaign raises €13.3m for Leeward Islands relief fund

Friday’s all-day campaign in The Netherlands to raise money for the victims of hurricane Irma on Sint Maarten and the other Dutch Caribbean islands raised €13.3m on the day itself.

The money will go to the Red Cross relief effort, which is focusing on providing shelter, water and food as well as kitchen and bathroom supplies for those affected by the hurricane earlier this month.

The Red Cross estimates that 91% of buildings in Sint Maarten were damaged and that two thirds of houses are completely destroyed. Earlier Sint Maarten’s prime minister William Marlin put the damage to the island at around €1bn
