Students and staff of the Saba Comprehensive School will participate in the SABA DOET campaign

Students and staff of the Saba Comprehensive School will participate in what will be the first official SABA DOET campaign with 4 fantastic projects that’s sure to make a difference and give back to the community.

On Friday March 15th and Saturday March 16th, the Saba Lions Club in collaboration with the Oranje Fonds is set to host the first official SABA DOET campaign – the largest volunteer event on Saba and within the Dutch Kingdom.

The initiative will highlight volunteering and well as volunteers throughout our local community. With a mission to help improve the general idea of volunteering and community service by showing how fun and creative it can be, Saba Comprehensive School Project Leader Shaigan Marten coordinated and submitted 4 projects to the campaign.
On March 15th, in collaboration with the Saba Triathlon Foundation, students of the SCS Robotics Club will participate in the “Saba Bike Cleanup” project. The Saba Triathlon Foundation’s main goal is to promote triathlon as a sport on Saba, and that means riding on bikes that are safe and in good shape. The project promotes overall healthy lifestyles, competitive sport and team building.

The second project will take shape at Saba’s Fort Bay Harbor where students of the SCS Sea Rangers Club & Hiking ECA in collaboration with Saba Nature Education will lead the “Saba Coastal Cleanup”. This event will take place on Friday March 15th where participants will carry out a coastal cleanup in the harbor and along the road up to Gary’s Pond. The project contributes to keeping Saba clean for the entire community and teaches the students the value of environmental protection.

The “Adopt a Grand Friend” project will see the SCS Social and Life Skills Club spending the day with the friends of the Old Age Home in The Bottom on Saturday, March 16th. The main

goal is for the students to bond and bridge the disconnect with the senior citizens through food and drinks, games, music and a gift exchange.
The final project will include SCS Staff with a special edition of “SCS Meals on Wheels” in collaboration with the local Meals on Wheels program. Throughout the week, the elderly clients who find it difficult to care for themselves physically and or financially, continue to live through having a healthy hot meal provided to them via the Meals on Wheels program. Clients of the program do not receive meals over the weekend, and through our project on Saturday March 16th, they will be able to enjoy a healthy, hearty meal, dessert and juice, that will be provided to them by The Saba Comprehensive School Staff, promoting team-building, communication, and community activism.

SCS encourages not only families, friends, and colleagues to sign up and participate in the SABA DOET campaign, but especially other local organizations and businesses who should also take an active role in giving back to the community.
