Saba has been removed from the list of potential UNESCO world heritage sites. The list has been updated this week. The Plantation System in West Curacao and the Bonaire National Marine Park have been maintained.
The provisional list of world heritage sites is evaluated from time to time. This is done by the Ministries of Education. Culture and Science and Agriculture and Nature and Food Safety. They nominate sites or remove them from the list.
Why Saba’s application has been withdrawn has not been announced. A spokesperson for the Dutch UNESCO committee said that placement on the provisional list is no guarantee that an area will actually be nominated by UNESCO. A nomination is time-consuming and expensive. A nominated site has to be of exceptional value to humanity. The local government and organizations must substantiate the arguments to support this.

To be blamed for that is the totally incomplete application without enough arguments to convince even the Dutch Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed. Because of this the RCE put the application on a waiting list, but already in the beginning it was clear that mainly because nothing of the cultural heritage on the island of Saba is protected by local legislation or regulations! What a pity!
