Visit of Lipscomb University Child Focus summer camp

A group of the Lipscomb University Child Focus summer camp visited the Public Entity Saba on Wednesday, July 10. Acting Island Governor Shamara “Amelia” Nicholson and Island Secretary Tim Muller received the students and camp leaders.

The 11 students of grade 5 and 6 of the Sacred Heart School, ages 10 to 12, and three camp leaders of Lipscomb University had many questions for the Acting Island Governor and Island Secretary. Lipscomb University comes to Saba twice a year and has a close relationship with the island. Every summer, Lipscomb University, through after school care organization Child Focus, organizes a two-week summer camp.

The children participate in different activities every day, such as gardening, hiking, dance classes, arts, music and sewing lessons. The children will also partake in the Keep Saba Clean clean-up event this Friday, July 12.

Part of the program is a visit to the local government. Nicholson and Muller welcomed the children and the camp leaders. The hosts briefly explained the way government works, the responsibilities that the government has and what services it provides to the people.

The children were given ample opportunity to ask questions. They asked about getting their driver’s license at an earlier age, studying abroad after completing secondary school, what an Island Governor and Island Secretary do, the cooperation with the other islands, and the importance of learning more than one language. Afterwards, the group gathered outside for a photo.
