Saba’s Vernisha Robinson wins Battle of the Future International

Sa­ba’s Vernisha Robinson emerged victorious in the Battle of the Future International #5 Junior Calypso Competition, which took place Friday night at Mike van Putten Youth Centre/Carnival City in St. Eustatius. Contestants from Saba, Anguilla and Aruba took part in the competition in which Statia was not represented. Besides the winner, Julisca Roosberg (Aruba), Janon Gail and Anna Lynch (both Anguilla) took part in the competition, which was monitored by Master of Ceremonies Leoncio “the Man Private” Lopes.

Robinson won this year’s competition with her song “Solid As A Rock,” which she per­formed on stage accom­panied by One Blood band from Saba. She won the grand prize of US $2,000 with 319 points.

Roosberg, who was the first runner-up with 277 points, received $500; second runner-up was Gail with 247 points who received $250, and Lynch ended as third runner-up with 241 points and received $100. All participants received a trophy and medal for participating in the competition.

Saba fans came to Sta­tia in force to support Robinson in the compe­tition, which was judged by Roland Webster (An­guilla), Azem Bailey (St. Kitts) and Dion “Mega D’ Humphreys (Statia). The night also featured performances from De-jour from St. Kitts, the Afro-Caribbean Danc­ers from Nevis and local bands D’Vybzz and Tur­bulanzz. The winner of Battle of the Future #4 Drejean “Master Blaster Jr.” Canwood from Sta­tia also performed his winning hit during the show.
