Tropical storm watch for Dorian discontinued for Saba, Statia

The tropical storm watch imposed Monday for Tropical Storm Dorian has been discontinued. the Royal Netherlands Meteoro­logical Institute KNMI said in its advisory bulletin of late Tuesday afternoon.

According to the weather bu­reau for the Caribbean Nether­lands, the risk of tropical-storm conditions affecting Saba and St. Eustatius is very small — less than 10 per cent.

Despite the discontinuation of the tropical storm watch, local authorities and residents of Saba and Statia were advised to contin­ue monitoring the further prog­ress of this weather system and to take all necessary measures to safeguard life and property.

The US National Hurricane Center said that tropical storm conditions are expected in the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and parts of the Dominican Republic tonight, Wednesday, and Thursday. Hurricane conditions were possible in Puerto Rico and portions of the Dominican Republic.

The KNMI said that in Saba and Statia near-shower gusts up to 45-50 miles per hour (mph) (around 75 ki­lometres per hour (km/h)) are possible until tonight. Accumulated rainfall may be one to two inches.

On Tuesday evening winds increased to fresh to strong, 19-31mph (29-49km/h), gradually becoming East to Southeasterly today. Near showers, strong gusts up to 45-50mph (around 75km/h) are possible. Winds will gradually decrease to moderate this after­noon, the KNMI said. Waves would be increasing from 3-5 feet to 5-7 feet on Tuesday evening, the weather bureau said.

Total amounts of 0.5 to 1.0 inches (15-25 millimetres (mm)) were expected Tuesday and today. There is a chance for accumulated rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches (25-50mm).
