The British Embassy in The Hague has appointed G.R. “Rik” Bergman to act as British Honorary Consul for St. Maarten with additional jurisdiction for St. Eustatius and Saba.
Bergman’s primary role will be to provide consular assistance to British nationals in the Windward Islands, but he will also be an intermediary between local authorities and the British Embassy, helping out on a range of issues, one of which will be crisis preparedness, for example, during hurricanes.
Bergman is partner in a law firm with offices in both St. Maarten and Curacao. He has been on the islands for 27 years, more than 20 of which were in St. Maarten.
In a recent visit to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London, Bergman visited the Consular and Crisis Management Department and is setting up a useful network of contacts for him to offer assistance to British nationals.
Bergman said of his appointment: “I am very honoured with my appointment and I am looking forward to working with the British Embassy and Consulate-General in order to offer consular assistance to British people in general and in times of crisis.”
