The toughest climb in the Kingdom of the Netherlands is back this Saba Day Weekend. A record amount of people is expected to join this Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 7:30am, for the annual Saba Day run — Sea to Scenery. The course is 6km long, which winds up from Cove Bay (next to the Red Cross Building) through the Hell’s Gate road to the top of Mount Scenery, Saba’s highest point. The elevation gain is nearly 1,000m. This is the fourth time that this race, organized by the Saba Triathlon Foundation, will go along this course.
Registration is free, and free transportation is also provided. Racers are asked to notify the Triathlon Foundation via email at sabatriathlon@gmail.com if they need a ride. Registration takes place at the starting line at Cove Bay from 7:00 to 7:30am. Safety support will be provided by the Red Cross, and water points will be available to participants.
Organizer Peter Johnson wants more walkers to attend. “Sea to Scenery is open to everyone, and anyone who starts is already a winner. It’s a cool challenge to go from the sea to the top of the mountain, and every idea is crazy until you actually try it out!”
Last year, on December 10, 19 persons participated in the Sea to Scenery race. Peter Johnson was the winner with a time of 58 minutes and 32 seconds, followed by Scott Paauwe who ran the course in 59 minutes and 11 seconds. Number three was Tom van Haaren with a time of 1:01:12. Sue Skibinsky was the first female to finish with a time of 1:08:57. Sarah van der Horn-Plante was second with 1:10:27 and Kelli Gustafsson with 1:29:12.
The next athletic event that will be organized on the island is the Saba Triathlon, on the morning of January 18, 2020. More information for both events may be found on the official Saba Triathlon Facebook page.
