Saba and St. Maarten Youth Participate in Inter-Island Games

On Saturday, June 10th, the Child Focus youth soccer team from Saba traveled to St. Maarten on the Dawn II for a friendly competition against soccer teams from St. Maarten. The invitational games were organized by Child Focus Foundation and the St. Maarten Football Association. The teams played three games of which all three were won by the Saban team.

The first match was in the under 13 category, against the Soualiga Club, where Saba won 1-0, with the winning goal made by John Mosquera.

The second game was in the under 11 category against the Veendam team, where Saba won 4-0. The winning goals in game two were made by Lemar Ryner, Thabio Nicholson, Jadrien Casallas and Greco Bautista.

The third match was against the Veendam team, in the under 13 category. Saba won the last match 4-1 with the winning goals being scored by Shaedan Abraham and Edwin Germaine.

The St. Maarten teams played strong middle field and the defense was resolute. The team from Saba has been coached by Alejandro Londono, Errol Bent and Orlando Mc Pherson since September. The teams have shown significant development and increased interest in the sport.

Sudesh Singh, president of the St. Maarten Football Association expressed his interest in Saba becoming an extension of the association. The coaches have expressed their goal to build a program of continuity by collaborating with the St. Maarten Football Association to organize future matches. Upon their arrival back to the harbor in Saba, the team was greeted with enthusiastic supporters.

Child Focus Foundation would like to thank Public Entity Saba for sponsoring the cost of the boat trip on the Dawn II. The Child Focus staff would like to congratulate all the players and commend the coaches and parent volunteer, Tara Every on their outstanding work.  On May 26th the Child Focus chess club also visited St. Maarten to participate in a chess tournament against students from St. Dominic High School. Sebastian Alkema won 1st place in the junior division and Kyle Buchanan won second place in the senior division.

Child Focus hopes to continue these shared collaborations with schools and organizations in St. Maarten, which encourage children to advance in their skills and build good sportsmanship.
