Commissioner of Health Rolando Wilson formally opened Fit Park Saba on Friday, March 3. The outdoor fitness area is free for all and can be used any time of the day.
The Public Health Department initiated the park as a new way to help people become more active. “An active lifestyle can prevent many illnesses and health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and joint pain. Exercising also helps to reduce stress and make people feel happier,” the Public Entity Saba said Monday in a statement.
Funding for the fitness Fit Park Saba park came from the Public Entity in collaboration with the Dutch national Government.
Commissioner Wilson expressed his enthusiasm for the fitness park, a facility that was lacking on Saba. He encouraged everyone to use the park freely and to take pride in keeping the area in good shape.
The equipment was produced by Norwell Outdoor fitness from high-grade stainless steel and designed to withstand intense usage and the harsh climate in the Caribbean. The installation was done by the Department of Public Works, Saba Road and Construction, and Work Monster construction.
Some finishing touches, including a new play set for children and a seating area, will be added over the coming weeks and months.
Guided-training sessions have started on Mondays from 5:00pm to 6:00pm, teaching people the multiple ways of using the equipment. There are plans to extend guidance to other days and to also use the area for more intensive training routines such as boot camps. The park is located next to Queen Wilhelmina Library in The Bottom.
