From May 30 – June 2, 2019 the first edition of the Inter-Island-Sports Competition took place on Saba. Just over 100 youngsters from Sint Maarten, St. Eustatius, and Saba came together to compete in different sports such as (fe)male soccer, basketball, volleyball, open water swimming, and several track and field events such as the Sea to SCS run and track and field distances of 60/100/200/400 meters.
Overall winner of the track and field was the Saba Comprehensive School, with the second place for St. Eustatius and the third place for the Caribbean International Academy.
The events took place at the harbor, at the renovated Johan Cruyff Court in The Bottom, and at the Peter L. Granger Sports Auditorium in St. John’s and were officially opened on Thursday afternoon by Commissioner Wilson.
Despite Friday’s heavy rainfall, the soccer matches continued. Special awards were given to Khalid Tavernier (most valuable player and he also scored the most goals for male soccer), Tyanne Nicholson was the most valuable player in female soccer and volleyball, while Desendre Jack won the most valuable player award for basketball. Alvin Duggins scored the most points in the basketball game.
Saturday the Caribbean International Academy ruled the open water swimming with the Saba Comprehensive School finishing in second place.
Overall winner for male soccer was the St. Maarten Academy PSVE, basketball winner was the St. Eustatius delegation. The Saba Team members were the champions in female soccer and volleyball.
During the closing ceremony Mrs. Tracy Zagers-Johnson thanked all participants, volunteers, sponsors and the organizing committee. The idea is to rotate the Inter-Island-Competition over the neighboring islands, making it an event to look forward to as well as well to prepare for.
After the closing ceremony a soccer-shoot-out was held. The winner of the shoot-out was Saba Comprehensive School’s John Mosquera-Gallego who donated his prize (a two-night stay at Queens Gardens Resort and Spa) to Tucker Kauffeldt (Caribbean International Academy). John will receive a return ticket to Sint Maarten with the Big B from one of the sponsors.
